Popcorn, stipple, vermiculite spray and plain old textured render all describe the same thing to most people: a ceiling with a bumpy surface that dates the room and collects dust.
Getting rid of it is straightforward on a modern ceiling and a serious job on an old one. The difference is not how the ceiling looks, it is what year it was sprayed, and you cannot tell that by eye.

Test It Before You Touch It
If the texture coating contains asbestos, sanding or scraping it dry is the single worst thing you can do to it, because it turns a stable surface into airborne fibre through the whole house. A sample test costs a fraction of what the clean-up would.
Textured ceiling coatings were sprayed across Perth homes for decades, and the older formulations could include asbestos as a binder. Age is the best first indicator, and the rough line is homes built or renovated before the late 1980s.
Age is an indicator, not a result. Plenty of 1970s homes have had their ceilings redone since, and plenty of 1990s renovations reused old stock. The only thing that settles it is a sample sent to a laboratory.
Vermiculite Is Not The Same Problem As Popcorn
Vermiculite is a mineral, not a coating recipe, and it turns up in Perth ceilings two different ways. Sprayed into a texture coating it looks like a coarse popcorn finish. Poured into the ceiling space as loose-fill insulation it looks like grey-brown gravel sitting between the joists.
Neither one is automatically asbestos. Some vermiculite was contaminated at the mine it came out of rather than by anything the builder did, so the risk travels with the batch and not with the job. That is why it cannot be judged by looking at it.
If there is loose granular fill in your ceiling cavity, do not go up there to look at it, do not run cables through it and do not let anyone install downlights into it until it has been tested. Disturbing loose material is a different exposure to scraping a hard coating, and roof-space work is the most common way people disturb it by accident.

If The Test Comes Back Clear
A clean result opens up three sensible options, and the right one depends on how thick the texture is and what the ceiling underneath it is doing.

Scraping is the cheapest and it is also the messiest, because the texture comes off wet and lands on everything under it. We sheet the room out first, and we would rather quote it properly than surprise you with the clean-up.
Adding a second ceiling under the first adds weight to framing that is already loaded, and it puts a surface between you and whatever the old ceiling does next. On a sound ceiling in a high room it is a reasonable choice. On a ceiling that is already moving, it is a way of paying twice.
If The Test Comes Back Positive
A positive result changes who is allowed to do the work, not just how it is done. Removal becomes licensed work with its own controls, waste handling and disposal, and it is quoted separately from the replacement ceiling that follows it.

What The Room Looks Like Afterwards
Whichever route the job takes, the end point is the same: a flat ceiling set to an agreed finish level and handed over paint-ready.
One thing worth planning for. A texture coating hides a lot, and a flat ceiling hides nothing, so the set work matters more on this job than on almost any other. Ask for level 4 in living areas rather than level 3 if the room gets side light.
