Cornice Replacement in Perth
Licensed, insured, and quoted in writing within 48 hours. We tell you straight whether it can be saved.
Cornice is the junction between ceiling and wall, and it's usually the first thing to crack when the building moves, the ceiling sags, or a water event runs down the wall. Old cornices also become a liability during ceiling replacement, removing the ceiling almost always damages the existing cornice.
We replace cornice in Perth across the full range, from standard 75mm cove through to ornate plaster cornices on pre-war homes in Fremantle and South Perth. We can also help with the decision whether to match the existing profile or take the opportunity to modernise with square-set or a contemporary cove.
Cornice work is often done in conjunction with ceiling replacement. We include cornice assessment in every ceiling replacement quote and can price it as part of the same job.

Matching, replacing or modernising
The right approach depends on the home, the client's intent, and what the existing cornice is.
| Profile | Description | Typical homes | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 75mm Cove (standard) | Smooth quarter-round curve, 75mm face | Post-1970 residential across Perth | Most commonly replaced, widely available |
| 90mm Cove | Larger smooth curve, wider face | Larger rooms, higher ceilings | More impactful, not much harder to source |
| OG (Ovolo Gee) | Stepped profile with ogee curve | 1950s–1970s homes, moderate use | Less common, may need profile matching |
| Federation / ornate plaster | Decorative cast profiles, high detail | Pre-1940 homes, Fremantle, Subiaco, South Perth | Heritage matching required, specialist suppliers |
| Square-set (no cornice) | No cornice, shadow-line or hard 90° return | Contemporary renovations | Modernises older homes; requires precision setting |
Heritage matching, period homes in Fremantle and inner Perth
Pre-war homes in Fremantle, Subiaco, and South Perth frequently have Federation-era plaster cornices with detailed profiles no longer in standard production. These require profile matching from specialist heritage plaster suppliers.
We have sourced heritage cornice profiles from West Australian suppliers for properties with specific heritage requirements. This isn't a quick fix, it requires lead time and a sample of the existing profile, but the result is a seamless match rather than an obvious patch.
Square-set cornices (no cornice, a precise 90° internal angle between ceiling and wall) have become popular in Perth renovations over the last decade. They give a contemporary look and can dramatically modernise an older home. They require precise setting work but can be priced in with a ceiling replacement at competitive rates.
How we do it
Existing cornice removed
Old cornice is scored, prised off, and removed. The junction between wall and ceiling is cleaned back to a sound substrate.
Junction prepared
Gaps or damage at the wall/ceiling junction are made good before the new cornice is fitted. This is where poor prep shows up later.
New cornice cut and fitted
Lengths are mitred at corners and butt-jointed on long runs with a backing strip. Nailed or screwed depending on substrate.
Joints and fixing points set
All mitre joints, butt joints, and nail heads are filled and set with cornice cement. Feathered to leave a clean, invisible joint.
Paint-ready handover
Sanded back, cleaned up, handed over ready for your painter. No visible joints, no movement gaps.

What cornice work costs
Removing a ceiling almost always damages the existing cornice. If you're having the ceiling replaced, pricing cornice replacement at the same time saves a second mobilisation fee. We'll include it in the ceiling quote as a line item, you can choose to include it or not.
