What Actually Goes Wrong With Perth Ceiling Insulation

Downlights, Clearances And Why The Order Matters
Recessed downlights get hot, and insulation packed against a fitting that is not rated for it is a genuine fire risk rather than a technicality. Australian wiring rules require clearance around a fitting unless it is specifically rated to be covered.
This is the practical reason to sort the lighting out at the same time as the ceiling. Your electrician can fit covered-rated LED units while the ceiling is open, which lets the insulation run continuously instead of having a hole cut around every light.
Ceiling comes down
Old sheets and any failed, wet or compressed insulation are removed and taken away.
Electrician first
Downlights, fans and exhaust units are wired and positioned while the bays are open. Fittings rated to be covered are the ones that let insulation run through.
Batts in
Insulation is laid bay by bay, butted tight, carried out to the eaves, and kept clear of anything that needs clearance.
Ceiling back on
Sheets go up, joints are set, and the ceiling is handed over paint-ready with the insulation sealed in behind it.
Choosing An R-Value Without Overthinking It
R-value measures resistance to heat flow, and higher is better. Perth's problem is summer heat coming down through the roof rather than winter heat escaping, and the ceiling is where most of that is won or lost.
Building work has a minimum R-value set by the National Construction Code, and the figure for Perth changed in the most recent update, so it is worth having your builder or certifier confirm the current number for your job rather than working off an older one.
A slightly lower R-value installed tight, with no gaps and full coverage to the eaves, outperforms a higher rating installed with gaps around it. If you are choosing between spending more on the product and spending more on getting it placed properly, place it properly.
